The focus of the 5th FIG Regional Conference will be on land
administration and good governance as conditions for sustainable
development. It will discuss these topics also through the technical
tools that modern surveying technology can offer in promoting these
main goals.
Sub-themes of the conference include topics that cover all FIG
ten technical commissions as well as the three divisions of the
Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS), namely general practice, land
surveying and quantity surveying. The objective of the conference is
therefore how to utilize effectively modern technologies to promote
good land administration strategies in furtherance of appropriate
governance practices to bring about integrated economic,
environmental and sustainable development.
The 5th FIG Regional Conference is organized by the International
Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS)

the first FIG Regional Conference to be held in West Africa and
continuity to two previous conferences held in Africa in Nairobi,
Kenya in 2001 and in Marrakech, Morocco in 2003. As has been the
case with the previous FIG regional conferences the conference in
Accra will be organized in co-operation with other international and
regional organizations like the United Nations and its agencies
(e.g. the UN Economic Commission for Africa), as well as with
international spatial information societies. The regional partners
will include associations in Africa. The conference is open to
participants from all over the world however with the main focus on
Africa and especially West Africa. To help participation from the
West African countries the conference will be held in English and
French. In all previous FIG regional conferences there have been
participants from 30-50 countries representing all continents.
