The 8th ISK Africa Regional-Conference 2023

Introduction

The Institution always aspires to organize activities that are geared towards achieving sustainable professional development.  For this reason, the Institution  organized the 8th ISK Conference on 16th and 17th November, 2023 at Boma Inn Hotel, Eldoret from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on both days. The theme of the 8th ISK Africa Regional Conference “Climate Resilient Surveying for Sustainable Land and Built Environment” was particularly important due to the pressing challenges that climate change poses to the land and built environment.

 Surveying professionals provide the foundation on which environmental scientists and built environment investors rely on to make informed decisions about land resource management. This symbiotic relationship is vital for safeguarding the environment and creating a sustainable future.

The Chief Guest of the ARC Conference, Hon. Alice Wahome, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development was represented by Weldon Maritim, Director of Survey. Special Guests at the ARC were Surv. Kwame Tenadu, snr. Vice President, International Federation of Surveyors and Solomon Kihiu, Director of NEMA, Eldoret. They Key Note Address was given by H.E Hon. Jonathan Bii, Governor, County Government of Uasin Gishu. The Institution achieved regional representation among the invited 24 Guest Speakers.

The Institution Managed to achieve regional representation amongst the Guest Speakers. The speakers handled the assigned topics adequately. A number of resolutions were arrived at from the various sessions;

  1. Climate change is real and is affecting us all. Surveyors should embrace EO to support climate change studies by use of interactive data driven maps, 3D real time GIS and storytelling maps in monitoring climate change in real time.
  2.  Multi-disciplinary research & innovation is an enabler for leveraging land resources in mitigating climate change
  3. There is a need to build capacity for Valuers to include green buildings and carbon credits in valuation
  4. It is necessary to review outdated legal and regulatory framework to include issues of climate change and green buildings adaptation and mitigation measures towards net zero decarbonization.
  5. Digitization makes service delivery faster, transparent and effective. It can foster a balance between societal needs and climate change on a sustainable basis
  6. It is vital to empower the youth and stay in tandem with current technology
  7. Surveyors are encouraged to offer solutions to clients on efficient use of energy, water and materials.
  8. Technological advancements in Geomatics offer a platform for easier, faster, and more reliable methods of surveying and mapping as drivers of sustainable land development and climate resilience
  9. Concepts such as smart cities are practical solutions for sustainable land use and development
