GHANA

Ghana, officially the Republic of Ghana, is a country in West Africa. It borders Cote d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Accra is the capital and the largest city.

It was inhabited in pre-colonial times by a number of ancient kingdoms, including an inland kingdom within, the Ashanti, and various Fante states along the coast. Trade with European states flourished after contact with th the Portuguese in the 15 century, and the British established a crown colony, Gold Coast, in 1874.

It was the first black African country to obtain independence from the United Kingdom in 1957, the name Ghana was chosen for the new nation as a reference to its ancient roots in the Empire of Ghana.

Ghana operates a centralized system of political administration with ten regions: Greater Accra, Volta, Central, Western, Eastern, Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Northern, Upper West and Upper East and 170 districts. The currency is Ghana Cedis (GH¢) and the exchange rate with US dollar (US$1.00 = GH¢5.60) according to the Bank of Ghana as at November, 2019.

With a young, thriving, stable democracy in a hotbed region, Ghana's involvement in promoting peace and stability in Africa is legendary. Its rapidly growing economy provides countless opportunities for investment and enterprise. Our educational sector is indeed one of the best in Africa, south of the Sahara, and has been directly responsible for the high literacy level of its population in English and other languages. Ghana is a beautiful country, apart from its abundant sunshine, lovely beaches, a preferred events/conferencing destination, spectacular locations, friendly and warm people, the organisation and staging of the FIG WORKING WEEK 2024 will be yet another opportunity to build on its credentials of using international events to facilitate national development and add value to its current events' LEGACY development.

The Greenwich Meridian

Also known as Longitude Zero degrees which stretches from Europe, passes through Ghana before entering into the Gulf of Guinea. In Ghana, the line passes through Tema in the Greater Accra Region, Salaga in the Northern Region and other cities in the Upper East Region. Tema in Ghana is located on longitude 0° and latude 5° north of the equator. It is the closest land selement closest to the centre of the world where the Equator & Greenwich Meridian meet at coordinate (0,0).

Akosombo Dam

Akosombo dam is located at the north east of the capital Accra. The river on which the dam was built can be described as a conglomerate of three rivers; the Black, White and Red Voltas. It is a hydro electric dam on the Volta River. Lake Volta is one of Ghana's most beautiful areas: The imposing Akosombo Dam splits the lake, its huge turbines generating electricity for the country.

The Cocoa Processing Company is situated in the picturesque port city of Tema in Ghana. The factory processes only the choicest premium Ghana cocoa beans without any blending to produce the Ghanaian Golden Tree cocoa chocolate of different sizes and flavours.

Krakum National Park

Kakum National Park, in the Central Region is a home to nature lovers. Trained guides are on hand to explain the economic, cultural, and medicinal values of plants and assist those interested in walking on the canopy walk to go over. Fifteen kilometers from Cape Coast is the serene, golden beach of Brenu Akyinim, a 3-kilometer stretch of sandy beach which provides an excellent site for swimming, sun bathing, and bird watching.
