Vice President Drees visits the Young Surveyors Days in Turkey

Dr. Andreas Drees, FIG Vice President visited the 2nd Young Surveyors Days in Trabson in Turkey May 16-19, 2003. About 350 participants attended the conference, among them 20-40 professors and staff members from the seven universities in Turkey, which provide education programmes for surveyors. The rest of participants were students and young surveyors, among them the greatest number was from the hosting Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon.

The Young Surveyors Days was the second of its kind in Turkey. The first event was arranged two years ago in Istanbul organized by the Istanbul Technical University under the leadership of Prof. Ahmed Aksoy, who is also the father of the Young Surveyors Days.
There is a strong historical tie between the Turkish and German surveyors because so many Turkish students have studied surveying at German universities in the past. At the 2nd conference there were three professional presentations from German speakers and one from a Turkish Professor, who replaced the slot that was opened after one of the invited speakers had to cancel in the last moment.

Like most students the Turkish surveying students think more about their studies and not much about the job opportunities after the examination. International organisations like FIG are mostly unknown.
