Abstract

This study explores the implications of boundary delineation on the socio-political and economic landscapes of the Eastern region of Nigeria. As the region grapples with complex identity issues and historical grievances, the accurate demarcation of boundaries emerges as a critical factor influencing governance, resource allocation, and inter-community relations such as the Rivers and one of the following states; Delta, Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom and lastly Bayelsa states boundary implications respectively. Employing qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, this study investigates the historical context of boundary delineation in the region, including colonial legacies and contemporary administrative challenges. The analysis reveals that ambiguous boundaries of the first three states created from the old eastern region; East Central, South Eastern and Rivers States have often led to conflicts, competition over resources, and exclusion from development initiatives. The region started in 1954 with a coverage of 75476sq.km and varied over time till 1996 as 77517sq.km. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for comprehensive policy frameworks that prioritize inclusive stakeholder engagement in boundary delineation processes such as state, province, division and presently local government area. By examining case studies that illustrate both successful and contentious boundary delineations, this research aims to provide insights that will contribute to fostering peace, equitable resource distribution, and sustainable development in the Eastern Region of Nigeria. Ultimately, the findings are intended to inform policymakers, community leaders, and researchers about the crucial role of boundary delineation in promoting social cohesion and regional stability in the parts of South-South and South-East geopolitical zones.
