Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications on Surveying in the
	ASEAN Region
		11-14 August 2024, , 2024, Manila, Philipines
In August, FIG, represented by Ryan Keenan, Chair of FIG Commission
5, visited the Philippines to participate in the workshop "Mutual
Recognition of Professional Qualifications on Surveying in the ASEAN
Region". Held over four days on August 11-14 in Manila, this workshop
was a Continuation of the International Conference for The Establishment
of The ASEAN Qualification Reference Framework on Surveying. Attendees
at this gathering included representatives of the members of the ASEAN
Federation of Land Surveying and Geomatics (also known as The AFLAG)
		https://aseanflag.org/.

Established in 1995, The AFLAG is the professional association duly
accredited by the ASEAN Secretariat based in Jakarta, Indonesia
representing the Geodetic Engineers, Surveyors and Geomatics
practitioners in the region. ASEAN members include Brunei Darussalam,
Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. FIG
is a long-standing Partner of AFLAG.

The purpose of this workshop was to further the significant
activities in the pan-ASEAN-region around mutual recognition of
Competences and Professional Qualifications, meaning surveyors qualified
in one of the ASEAN countries, can easily work in other ASEAN countries
thanks to the reciprocal agreements. This in turn fulfills one of
AFLAG’s objectives to maintain peace and promote prosperity in the ASEAN
region through mutual cooperation and the advancement of the profession
		of land surveying and geomatics.
Chair of FIG Commission 5, Dr. Ryan Keenan, represented FIG during this
important event, and shared insights on ‘The Crucial Role of FIG in
Promoting Professional Standards and Practices Globally’, in particular
noting the numerous publications and reports FIG contributes to, through
its Commissions and regional capacity development networks.

In keeping with the continued professional development of surveying,
this workshop was held as a pre-event to the 17th South East Asia Survey
Congress (SEASC) where more than 1,500 geodetic engineering delegates
		were expected.

In addition, the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), through the
Professional Regulatory Board of Geodetic Engineering (PRBGE),
recognized the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) as the
premier international organization representing the interests of
surveyors worldwide. In line with this recognition, the PRBGE and its
stakeholders will collaborate with FIG for training and education
programs to uplift and advance the surveying profession in the
Philippines. This special recognition is a testament to our collective
dedication to advancing the surveying profession within ASEAN.

FIG looks forward to continued collaboration with the Geodetic Engineers
of the Philippines, Inc, and the ASEAN FLAG, and has invited them to
attend the FIG Working Week 2025 in Brisbane, Australia next April.
