On 3rd January 2011, Dato’ Prof Dr. Abdul Kadir Taib, Director General of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (Department of Survey and Mapping, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Malaysia) cordially received Mr. CheeHai Teo, FIG President at his office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Director General also chairs the Land Surveyors Board, the regulatory authority for the land surveying profession in Malaysia. FIG President thanked the Director General for his continuing support for FIG and his attendance at the recent FIG Handover Ceremony.

During the courtesy visit, various matters were discussed including the standing and advancement of the profession in Malaysia, the active participation of the Department’s officers at FIG events, as well as the support of the Department in particular, the Government of Malaysia in general for the XXV FIG Congress in 2014.

The Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia advises the Government of Malaysia in the field of cadastral survey and mapping along with the matters related to state and international boundaries. The Department provides complete and conclusive cadastre information for issuing land, strata and stratum titles, manages the national cadastre and mapping databases; publishes topographical, cadastre, thematic and utility maps for purposes including that of planning, management of natural environment and resources, preservation of the environment, development, surveillance and security. The Department also provides geodetic infrastructure for the purposes of cadastre survey, mapping, engineering as well as scientific researches, survey and determine, demarcate maintain state and international boundaries for the needs of state administration and sovereignty of the country.

The Land Surveyors Board plays an important role in keeping the land surveying profession abreast with the latest development and advancement in survey sciences and practices; whose primary objective is to regulate and control the licensing of land surveyors as well as to exercise disciplinary control as provided by law.

Ensuing discussion included efforts to ensure that the XXV FIG Congress in 2014 be one of the most successful congresses in FIG’s history. A proposal for a high level XXV FIG Congress 2014 National Steering Committee was also discussed where one of the terms of reference is to ensure that the promises made during the successful bid presentation in Sydney are fulfilled.

FIG President welcomed these XXV FIG Congress initiatives as well as efforts and thanked Dato’ Prof. Dr. Abdul Kadir Taib for the courtesies shown to him.
